O livro de Marcia Ferran resulta de sua tese de doutorado em cotutela franco-brasileira, defendida em 2007. Apesar desses 13 anos de espera, sua atual publicação não poderia ser mais aportuna. O desafio da hospitalidade, proposto pela autora – devidamente apoiada em Emmanuel Lévinas – como uma forma de resistência crítica a partir da arte, é ainda mais urgente hoje do que naquele momento de realização da pesquisa, sobretudo considerando-se o absurdo incentivo à incultura, à intolerância e ao desacolhimento, naturalizado hoje no país. A autora nos traz uma série de indagações pertinentes e pistas importantes – a partir do estudo de experiências culturais suburbanas no Rio e em Paris – sobre os desejáveis respeito às diferenças, aceitação de alteridade e acolhimento da diversidade, em defesa da rica multiplicidade cultural dos vários outros que coexistem nos espaços públicos das cidades contemporâneas. Aproxima-se, assim, daquilo que Achille Mbembe chamou bem recentemente – ao se opor à atual “política de inimizade” nacionalista e/ou neoliberal de diversos países em relação aos migrantes – de “ética da passagem, circulação e transformação”: uma política de aproximação, amizade, urbanidade e hospitalidade. Eis um debate fundamental para todos que lutam contra a segregação, mercantilização e espetacularização urbanas e buscam uma efetiva democratização das nossas cidades.
